beat yourself up
i'm sure we've seen this in movies:
hero pwns everyone
evil villain comes along
clones hero
hero meets strongest nemesis yet
often we hear:
"you are your greatest enemy"
this is so because
we know ourselves too well
how we react, how we act
and more importantly,
how we fight are all within our own graps
it is difficult to out smart
out maneuver ourselves
we know far too well in ourselves
how much our bodies can take
how much farther we can run
and how long more before we break down
it is not often that we can lie to ourselves
when was the last time you said
"i am the fastest thing alive"
and still get beaten by
victor tanlow xide the next day?
as runners we all must admit
that we have given up more than not
but as we push for this coveted title
how can we go on without overcoming this?
i feel:
if you cannot beat you
and i cannot beat i
then i will beat you
and you will beat i -
it is the holding of the team in your hearts
it is the remembering of the times
and it is the testing of that bond
it goes further than i want to win
more than i want less pain;
that is perhaps ineffective
but it is saying i will win
because they need me to
